BYOB Sports Community Guidelines & Safety

Effective date: October 20, 2026

BYOB exists so people can find a good game and play it with good people. These guidelines explain how we expect everyone to behave and share practical tips for staying safe on and off the court.

The rules in Sections 1 to 4 are part of our Terms of Use, and breaking them can lead to suspension or a ban. The tips in Sections 5 and 6 are recommendations. If anything here conflicts with the Terms of Use, the Terms of Use control.

BYOB does not screen, supervise or run background checks on players, organizers or venues. You are responsible for your own safety and judgment at every game.

1. Who can play

  • You must be 18 or older to use BYOB. Do not create an account for anyone under 18.

  • Use your real age and identity. Do not create fake accounts or impersonate anyone.

  • Do not invite, contact or arrange games with anyone under 18 through BYOB.

  • One account per person. If we ban you, do not create a new account.

2. Respect and sportsmanship

  • Treat every player with respect, whatever their skill level, background, gender, race, religion, age, disability or sexual orientation.

  • No harassment, threats, bullying, intimidation or hate speech, in the app or at a game.

  • No unwanted romantic or sexual advances. BYOB is for sports, not dating.

  • No fighting, intentionally dangerous play, or playing to injure someone.

  • Do not show up to a game impaired by alcohol or drugs.

  • Keep your commitments. If you join a game and can't make it, leave the game in the app as early as you can.

3. What you post

  • No sexually explicit, violent, hateful or illegal content in your profile, photos, messages, comments or game listings.

  • No spam, scams, or advertising unrelated to games.

  • Do not share another person's private information, such as their phone number, address or photos, without their permission.

  • Only post photos you have the right to share.

4. Organizing games

  • Keep game listings accurate: the sport, location, time, skill level and number of players.

  • Only list venues that are open to the public or that you have permission to use.

  • If players will split costs such as court or field fees, state the amount in the listing before anyone joins. Do not ask for more later.

  • Do not use BYOB to run a paid business, such as leagues, coaching or camps, without our written permission.

  • If a game is canceled or changes, update the listing right away so players aren't left waiting.

5. Meeting other players

We recommend that you:

  • Play at public venues such as parks, recreation centers and public courts, especially the first time you play with someone new.

  • Tell a friend or family member where you are going and when you expect to be back.

  • Arrange your own transportation to and from the game.

  • Keep conversations in the BYOB app until you are comfortable sharing your phone number or social accounts.

  • Never send money to another player outside of agreed game costs.

  • Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, you can leave at any time.

6. Playing safely

Sports carry a real risk of injury. We recommend that you:

  • Talk to a doctor before starting a new sport or a more intense level of play.

  • Warm up, stay hydrated, and take breaks, especially in heat.

  • Wear proper footwear and protective gear for your sport.

  • Check the playing surface and surroundings before you start, and don't play on unsafe surfaces.

  • Choose games that match your skill and fitness level.

  • Stop playing if you feel pain, dizziness or chest discomfort.

7. Reporting, blocking and emergencies

In an emergency, call 911 first. BYOB cannot send help to a game.

To report or block a player, open their profile and select "Report Player" or "Block Player." You can also email hello@byobsports.com. Report anyone who breaks these guidelines, in the app or at a game.

  • Blocked players can no longer see your profile or contact you.

  • We review reports and act on them within 24 hours.

  • We do not tell the reported player who reported them.

  • Making false or retaliatory reports is itself a violation of these guidelines.

8. Enforcement

BYOB has zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive users. Depending on how serious a violation is, we may remove content, issue a warning, suspend an account, or permanently ban a user. We may skip straight to a ban for threats, violence, sexual misconduct, or any contact with minors. Where conduct may be a crime, we may share information with law enforcement. Banned users may not create new accounts.

These guidelines do not limit our rights under the Terms of Use.
